Did you know that High Country Quilts is the oldest quilt shop in Colorado Springs? We celebrated our 24th anniversary in February of this year. High Country Quilts was established in 1983, across the street from our present location and the owners' names have changed several times, but we at High Country Quilts are proud of all the happy quilting that the shop has nurtured all through the years. We have a sign by the front door in the shop that says, "I feed my soul by the stitches I sew." It reminds us all how much quilting means to us.
We are an independent full-service quilt store with year-round classes and, we are an APQS Long Arm Quilting Systems Dealer as well as Colorado Springs' only independent authorized BERNINA dealer and full-service sewing center. HCQ also specializes in making beautiful kits for projects by Jinny Beyer, McKenna Ryan, Mount Redoubt, Moda University, our monthly Strip Club, as well as our unique HCQ Block of the Month, kits, and patterns. We are also proud of our great customer service!
We have new owners here at High Country Quilts as of November, 2005. We are Jean Wilt, Karen Rellaford and Natalie Glaser, and we pooled our courage and resources to purchase the store. Many of you know us, as we have been staffers and teachers for a number of years (15 years total among us). Though we are "newbies" at shop ownership, we have strengths that complement each other. We hope to be having fun quilting with you for many years. Let us introduce ourselves:
Karen: "I have been a quilter for over 25 years and prefer piecing to applique. For me, it's all about color and texture. There is nothing better than to help a customer pull beautiful colors together to become a work of art. A close second is learning new techniques and incorporating them into the classic designs that I love. I'm a wife of 34 years with two adult sons who live in the Springs. I love Colorado and cannot imagine living anywhere else! My secret dream has always been to own a quilt shop. I'm so blessed to be able to realize that dream with Natalie and Jean."
Jean: "I consider myself to be somewhat of a native, moving to Colorado Springs in 1969 while my father was in the Air Force. I met my husband Ron while I attended CSU and he attended the Air Force Academy. My first quilting class was in 1984 while stationed in Abilene, Texas. With two young children, I needed an outlet for myself while Ron was deployed. So I enrolled in a quilting class and created my first sampler quilt. I continued to quilt over the years while the children were in school and Ron was TDY. I began working and teaching at High Country Quilts in 2000 and have enjoyed every minute of it." Jean's hobbies include quilting, sewing, smocking, cross-stitch, knitting, baking, crafts, and . . . more quilting!
Natalie: "My first quilt was in 1974 when my son was two. I found some drapery fabric with airplanes printed on it, sewed it together to be a bedspread and quilted it by machine with the invisible nylon thread I got at the fabric store. That thread was more like nylon cable! I used a cotton batt--that quilt was heavy enough to withstand a Colorado winter, but a little heavy for southern California.
My first real quilt came out of classes at High Country Quilts in 1986, and I've never stopped enjoying quilting or learning about quilts and quilting. I've worked at High Country Quilts since late 1996, and have designed our blocks of the month since 1998, with a break in 2002. Frankly, I have more plans for quilts I want to make than any two people could do in their lifetimes!"
HCQ specializes making beautiful kits for quilts and projects by Jinny Beyer, McKenna Ryan, Mount Redoubt, Moda University, our monthly Strip Club, as well as a Block of the Month and unique kits designed by HCQ owners and staff. We're also known for our great customer service!
